China lashes out at Xinjiang ‘lie’ after US lawmaker urges Starbucks to close new stores

Beijing has hit back at a US lawmaker’s criticism of coffee chain Starbucks for opening its first stores in Xinjiang, rejecting the allegation that China has committed human rights abuses against the far-western region’s mostly Muslim Uygur population. Foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun on Saturday said claims of “genocide” in Xinjiang were a “blatant lie” and accused the “US group” who raised the suggestions of attacking Beijing for political purposes. “Today’s Xinjiang enjoys social...

China dismisses US committee's criticism over Starbucks' Xinjiang expansion

Starbucks, the international coffee chain giant, recently opened its first stores in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, drawing criticism from some US politicians. The so-called "genocide" allegations concerning Xinjiang are a blatant lie, said Guo Jiakun, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, in response to a media inquiry about the US Select Committee on China, which called Starbucks' decision to open stores in the region "morally bankrupt" over the allegations. "This US group is known for vilifying China out of political motives and has absolutely no credibility to speak of," Guo said. "Today's Xinjiang enjoys social stability, economic prosperity, ethnic unity and religious harmony," he added. China will continue to expand high-standard opening up and provide more opportunities for foreign businesses to invest and thrive in the country, the spokesperson said. Starbucks opened two stores in Xinjiang on Tuesday, marking its debut in the region and its latest expansion in China, its second-largest market after the United States.
