Israeli journalists clash with Irish press chief as teams prepare for rematch
The Football Association of Ireland's communications manager, Kieran Crowley, clashed with Israeli journalists during a press conference on Saturday. The spat came as Ireland and Israel prepare for Sunday's UEFA Nations League match. The two teams played each other on September 27, despite calls from within Ireland for the game to be boycotted over Israel's actions in Gaza and the wider Middle East. The Football Association of Ireland decided to play the designated “home game” behind closed doors in Serbia. Ireland won the game 3-0. One Israeli journalist asked Ireland's coach Hemir Hallgrimsson about the FlyDubai incident where an Israeli-bound plane was seemingly hijacked by its copilot, who Israel's Prime Minister Netanyahu said had undergone "Islamist radical indoctrination.". Another accused the Irish players of calling Israeli players "monkeys" during their previous match, which Crowley dismissed as "completely untrue." Ireland's Football Association is investigating allegations that Irish players were themselves subject to monkey chants from Israeli fans in Sunday's match.
