Evo Morales on Bolivia's MAGA mega-corruption coverup
On September 29, the Trump administration placed sanctions on Bolivia’s Attorney General, Roger Mariaca. But Mariaca had committed no crime. Instead, he had sought to prosecute Trump’s top asset in. Latin America, Fernando Cerimedo, an advisor to right-wing Bolivian’s president Rodrigo Paz, who stands accused of hiring hitmen to kill his girlfriend as she planned to go public with allegations of election rigging and drug trafficking. Two days after Mariaca was hit with US sanctions, he was arrested under apparent orders from the US - specifically, Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Meanwhile, Cerimedo’s former girlfriend and alleged victim, Nadia Beller, has released a photograph showing Cerimedo with Donald Trump Jr. She presented it as evidence of Cerimedo’s political access and influence in Trump’s crony networks. Beller interpreted the State Department’s action against Mariaca as direct interference in the investigation and an attempt to protect Cerimedo. Cerimedo worked closely with Brad Parscale, the former Trump campaign manager, now a registered lobbyist for the government of Israel, placing him under the protection of powerful political networks extending beyond Bolivia. To better understand the implications of the assault on Mariaca, and Cerimedo’s influence in Bolivia, we spoke with Evo Morales, the first indigenous President of Bolivia and founder of the left-wing MAS Party.
